Violence survivors sharing their experiences

A public hearing was held on September 14, 2025, in the hall of the Ranishankail Upazila Health Complex in Thakurgaon district. Four incidents of violence against women were presented in the public hearing. The survivors of the incidents presented the incidents and tortures against. For instance, a woman’s buttock was burnt by her mother-in-law with a hot pan. In another incident, after the death of her husband, the relatives from in-laws' family threw her out of the house because she had two daughters and no son. In the third incident, the in-law’s family denied the child after getting pregnant for dowry, tortured her and threw her out of the house, and in another incident, the woman was severely tortured and her three-month-old child was taken away from her and threw her out of the house.

The jury board for the hearing consisted of a barrister, a former police officer and a lawyer. Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer in Charge (OC) at local police station, Upazila Social Service Department representative, Upazila Education Officer were presented as guest speakers. In addition, CSO members, representatives of local civil society and journalists were also present at the public hearing. The jury board members heard the details of the four incidents and mentioned that the incidents were case-worthy under Section 11 (b) and (c) of the Prevention of Atrocities on Women and Children Act, 2000 (Amendment 2003), Section 3 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 2018. They asked the OC to accept the cases and requested to provide a reference for the public hearing in the cases.
